Welcome to Whiting Elementary School!
ACTIVITIES IN/OUT OF THE CLASSROOM FILL THE LAST FEW WEEKS
The last month started with a visit by the Middlebury Ambulance, when Tim and Shyla brought their rescue vehicles to school, explained what they do and how they help people in an emergency, gave safety tips(i.e. how to always know where you are) and showed their equipment and tools and dress of the paramedic trade. It continued with last week-end’s FOWS Bike-a-thon and this week’s SOAR Finale Celebration and Whiting Week’s The World Around Us Demonstration of Learning and Family Pot-Luck. Next week, there’s Move-Up Day (and Funky Hair Day) and Pre-School Graduation. Added to this are classroom trips and events. Two weeks from today, join us at Crystal Beach for the all-school beach and bbq day, and in the evening when we honor our four graduating sixth graders: James DiSabito, Colton Leno, Michaela Sherwin and Samantha Sumner. Yep, it’s all about the last month of the school year, and we wouldn’t want it to be any other way.

ORDER A SUMMER SKILLS MATH BOOK
As last year, we once again make available the opportunity to order a math resource that will help students retain what they have learned during the year. Sample grade-specific books and an order form are displayed in the school lobby. Orders due on Weds, 6/2 for delivery by end-of-school.

WHITING SAYS “THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK" TO DEPARTING STAFF
It is with much regret that bid “good-bye” and recognize the contributions of three current staff members to the learning and growing of Whiting learners. Nancy Bart, our librarian, Megan Coleman, art teacher, and Kathy Sherwin, learning specialist/special educator, have declared their intention to move on: Mrs. Bart will be scaling down and continue her work at Leicester Central School, Ms. Coleman has accepted a full-time position at Wait River Elementary, and Mrs. Sherwin will be moving to Otter Valley Middle School. We are all very grateful for their years with us and what each has given to Whiting students, and we wish them well in their new and continuing professional work.

1ST AND 3RD GRADERS “MOVE UP” NEXT WEEK...FOR A HALF-DAY, ANYWAY
So that they can meet their new teachers and classmates who will be with them in the fall, Whiting’s current 1st and 3rd grade students will be experiencing a morning in what will be their new classroom. Move-Up Morning is scheduled for next Thursday, June 3. Ms. Smith will be welcoming the seven soon-to-be second graders who will be in the 2-3 classroom in the fall, and Mrs. Roy will greet the six students who will be our new fourth graders. While it’s just for a few hours, it will give those who will be learning in new classrooms a feel for what it will be like before the summer vacation comes. So that they can meet their new teachers and classmates who will be with them in the fall, Whiting’s current 1st and 3rd grade students will be experiencing a morning in what will be their new classroom.
